Setup, before you import
A bank statement import needs one ledger to already exist before anything else: the bank account itself. Get this one right and every voucher the import creates posts against it correctly.
Creating it
Why the group matters
Tally treats these groups differently in reports — a savings or current account belongs under Bank Accounts; an overdraft or cash-credit facility belongs under Bank OD A/c or Bank OCC A/c instead, since those can carry a running liability rather than an asset balance. Putting a plain savings account under the wrong group won't stop vouchers from posting, but it will misclassify the balance in your balance sheet until it's corrected.
After the ledger exists
Once the bank ledger (and a Suspense ledger for anything unmapped — see our Suspense ledger guide) exist, you're ready to import: convert your statement PDF on bank2tally, then bring the resulting XML in through Gateway of Tally → Import → Vouchers.
Questions
Bank Accounts, for a normal savings or current account. Use Bank OD A/c or Bank OCC A/c only for an overdraft or cash-credit facility, since those carry a running liability balance instead.
Yes. Tally's XML import creates vouchers, not ledgers — the bank ledger (and any ledger the transactions map to) must already exist, spelled exactly the same way, or the import rejects that voucher.
The account's actual balance as of your books' start date — matching your bank statement's opening balance for that date avoids a mismatch the first time you reconcile.
